The Brief
To create a space that is an extension of the lounge room while maximising privacy, eliminating views of rooftops and enhancing harbour and city views without losing any natural light. An Eastern Boho scheme is to be introduced to reflect personal style. Furniture to be selected must be casual and comfortable with a contemporary style. Pots to be selected must be of modern style and mixed with a combination of pots. Plants to be selected must be low maintenance and of classic style.
The Solution - Furniture
I have selected two black Butterfly chairs placed on either side of the entrance as they are contemporary, reflecting the interior style. This will unify the two spaces, extending the living area out on to the balcony. The chairs dark colour will also contrast against the lighter colours in the space adding depth to the balcony. Their symmetrical placement will achieve a sense of balance in the space, creating a greater visual impact. The Butterfly chairs are classified as a casual lounge chair which will bring comfort and purpose to the space.
Placed next to each Butterfly Chair are two black Hour Glass Stools. Their modern style and colour will compliment the Butterfly Chair, creating a sense of unity. The stools are very versatile as they can be used as a side table when relaxing and can also be used as extra seating when required for entertaining guests.
I have placed scatter cushions on each Butterfly chair to add extra comfort. The fabrics chosen are all of different patterns which creates an Eastern Boho scheme, adding dimension and interest to the balcony. The earthy coloured patterns in each fabric warm up the balcony as well as reflecting the oak kitchen in the interior. This connects the two spaces, achieving an extension of the living space.
Feature Pots & Plants
In the right and left hand corners along the balustrade I have placed a large Atlantis Tall U Pot planted with a Coastal Rosemary and a medium Atlantis Tall U Pot planted with Gardenia Florida. Their symmetrical position achieves a sense of balance on the balcony. This repeats the positioning of the Butterfly Chairs creating greater visual impact and consistency to the design.
The Atlantis pots will add warmth and depth to the space due to their earthy tones and rough texture. There round shapes will also soften the rectangular look of the balcony and compliment the organic form of the Butterfly chairs and Hour Glass stools. The Tall U Pots height will help eliminate and disguise the view of rooftops below as well as creating more privacy from the neighbours on the right. They will also frame and draw your eye out to the city views, enhancing the outlook on the balcony. Each Atlantis pot will be selected to ensure a consistent colour palette with a preference for pots with more grey colour tones with a hint of earthy, brown tones to compliment the oak kitchen and scatter cushions.
Gardenia and Coastal Rosemary are considered a classic style plant which will contrast against the modern style of the chairs and interior. This adds interest and creates an eclectic style, enhancing the Eastern Boho scheme. The Gardenias soft, round leaves will contrast against the sharp, lineal leaves of the Coastal Rosemary, adding interest to the grouping. They both bloom white flowers which will reflect the white found in the existing interior and exterior schemes and will also add fragrance to the space.
I have selected three, large Terrazzo Euro trough's in black planted with two Japanese Buxus placed in between the Atlantis groupings and along the balustrade. The Terrazzo pots colour will compliment the Butterfly Chairs and Hour Glass Stools, creating a more unified space. There rectangular shape will also maximise space around the centre of the balcony.
The Japanese Buxus provide softness to the space due to their round leaves and this also compliments the Gardenia Florida, completing the grouping. They also disguise the view of the rooftops below, enhancing the outlook from the balcony. Buxus will stay quite short in height which wont block any natural sunlight entering the balcony.
Finishing Touches
The pots are mulched with "white" 30-40mm stones. These tie in with the white inside your living areas as well as helping to protect the soil from drying out.
